After that, the floors are mopped with a mixture of Seven Powers oil (bought at the local supermarket) with divestment (another oil), asafoetida (a strong-smelling herb) and indigo. This ritual is said to bring prosperity into the New Year. If a simple celebration is more your speed enjoy a traditional New Years meal of empanadas and a awesome fireworks display over the Panama Canal.

New Years Eve in Mallorca is celebrated all over the island with an abundance of spectacular firework displays. Smaller villages have live music and dancing as well. Grapes are eaten during the count down to midnight. According to tradition, it is believed that if you eat 12 grapes as the clock strikes midnight (one for each of the twelve chimes) will have a lucky and prosperous year. In the city of Palma, Festa de l’Estendard is celebrated in honor of the Christian conquest of Palma in 1229, with a procession from the town hall to Mass at the cathedral.
