- Service Your Car:
Your car needs to be checked from bumper to bumper when you travel. Make you your battery is checked, and you have enough windshield fluid and that the wipers are in good condition. It is also a great idea to have your brakes and tires checked. This could be very dangerous since the roads will be slippery and wet. So get them checked and replaced before travels.
- Plan Your Route:
Whether you’re putting it in the GPS or writing on a map, planning your route can make your life so much easier. Plan for detours just in case there was an accident or roadblocks and make plans to stop and rest. Driving when it’s snowing can be very draining. So utilize that time by stretching, sleeping, eating and just looking over your map or GPS to get a good estimated time for when you should arrive. Be cautious and keep a full tank of gas. For those moments when you’re stuck in a traffic jam or just stuck somewhere make sure you have emergency numbers (family, friends, hospitals) and the addresses of the hospital or fire department within that area close.
- Packing:
With traveling during the winter, you want to keep warm. Be sure to pack a lot of sweaters and long- sleeve shirts, extra socks and boots. Those things can sometimes be forgotten so put them in the car along with your survival kit.
- Survival Kit:
Before heading out you want to be sure that you have these items in your kit.
- Blankets
- Water and food
- Flashlights and batteries
- A broom, shovel, and scraper
- Jumper cables and warning devices (flares, markers)
- Kitty litter or sand
- Cell phone and chargers
- Band aids and medicine
In case of an emergency remember to stay calm, because if you panic then everyone else will start to panic. Just remember to stay safe, drive slow and know your surroundings.
